| This handy tool consists of a small (3/8" X 1" X 3") block of solid magnesium, with a full length of Ferrocerium Rod set into one of the edges. Because magnesium is relatively soft, the block can be scraped with a knife to form a small pile of shavings. Then, when you striking the edge of the sparking insert it ignite the shavings, the magnesium flares up at a temperature of 5400°F. It provides that positive flame to light your tinder when you need more than just sparks. A short piece of hacksaw blade works best for shaving the magnesium and for throwing huge amounts of sparks. |
