| Northwest Woodsman Explore the Unreachable |

| In the Northwest, if you find coniferous trees you will find the Red squirrel busy scurrying around looking for food. The Red Squirrel is a very vocal little critter that will let you know when you have come to close and it's a good thing we can't understand squirrel talk. Like birds, the Red Squirrel is a great alarm to let you know that something may be moving close by. I have tracked the movement of a coyote through the woods by listening to the chatter of the squirrels. They eat mainly pine nuts and will move freely from the trees to the ground to work on their meal. You will find remains of pine cones on stumps or logs. Their tracks will show 4 toes on the front foot and 5 toes on the back. A close cousin of the Red squirrel is the Douglas squirrel which is found in the coastal regions of the Northwest. |
